Air Company officially released its Air Vodka for retail with the launch of its online e-commerce platform on August 26. The sipping vodka, the startup’s first consumer product, stands out from other vodka brands because it’s fighting climate change.
Air Vodka is only made with two ingredients: carbon dioxide (CO2) and water. This is a remarkably simple makeup when considering the typical process of producing vodka, which involves the fermentation of any foodstuff containing sugar or starch and distillation of the product to increase the alcohol content.
The new vodka from Air Company has a different production method. The startup has its own patented distillation system that runs on renewable solar electricity.
This system takes CO2 from the air and turns it into pure ethanol for the vodka. For every bottle of Air Vodka produced, a pound of the greenhouse gas is removed, thus making it the world’s first carbon-negative spirit, according to the company.
The result? An 80-proof premium vodka so pure that it tastes, as British GQ put it, “almost like water” and “clean and crisp like a shard of light.”
This innovative product earned Air Company a spot as a finalist in the $20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, a global competition that recognizes breakthrough technologies capable of converting CO2 emissions into usable products.
But Air Company is not just a vodka company. The business, helmed by co-founders Gregory Constantine, CEO, and Stafford Sheehan, CTO, describes itself as a “technology and design company in New York City that ideates and creates products that help shape our future.”
The sustainable startup develops proprietary technologies—all designed with the mission of helping the world by converting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into value-added products. Other items we might see coming from Air Company in the future are perfumes and other ethanol-based consumer products.
Air Vodka is now available for direct-to-consumer orders on its website, the Minibar app and website and the Drizly app and website for delivery in New York. For in-person purchases, people can visit retailers in select locations in New York and New Jersey.
The carbon-negative vodka comes in a 750ml bottle. Though pricing depends on availability and the merchant, Air Company’s website offers a range of $65 to $74.99 per bottle. To best enjoy Air Vodka, the company recommends drinking it on the rocks or in a cocktail that won’t detract from its clean flavor, such as the martini.
