High Demand for Myanmar Sugar at Home and Abroad
It is learned from the Myanmar Sugar and Cane Related Product Association (MSCRPA) that the trading of sugar in the Mandalay market is robust as the demand is high at home and abroad.
A responsible person from MSCRPA said that in the Mandalay market, sugar trading was normal in the first week of August, 2024 but it rose significantly in the second week of August.
The sugar stock in the market would not be emptied by the high demand but there might be a shortage of sugar in the market, he said.
The current sugar price in the Mandalay market is 4,750 Kyats per viss (approx. 1.6 Kg).
The major export market of Myanmar sugar is Vietnam. Offers are also received from buyers in ASEAN and other countries including India, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
The major sugar producers are in Mandalay, Sagaing, Yangon and Bago Regions.
The MSCRPA said that sugar exports in the 2023-24 season would be less than the export target. Some sugar mills in Sagaing Region and Shan State could not have been operational since the fighting erupted in these areas so that the sugar output was about 20,000 tonnes less than the previous output estimate.
The sugar acreage across the country is over 430,000 acres and the major production areas are in north and south Shan State, Sagaing Region, and Bago Region.
