Mitr Phol Develops Renewable Energy from Agricultural Crops to Become Fossil Fuel Independent

At the panel discussion Move Forward Green Economy Transitions, part of the seminar Road to NET ZERO 2024: The Extraordinary Green, organized by Thansettakij newspaper on September 26, 2024, Mr. Thunyawee Pongwattanasuk, Managing Director of Mitr Phol Biofuel Co., Ltd., highlighted the future of renewable energy from agriculture in Thailand. He emphasized that Mitr Phol is a leading producer of renewable energy in the country, particularly through utilizing key agricultural crops such as sugarcane, corn, cassava, rubberwood, and oil palm. The company is committed to maximizing resource efficiency and promoting environmentally friendly practices.

Mitr Phol leverages its strength in converting various crops into renewable energy, with sugarcane accounting for up to 56% of its input. The production process begins with crushing sugarcane to extract sugar. The leftover bagasse from this process is then repurposed as biomass energy, a clean and sustainable power source.

Utilizing sugarcane bagasse as biomass energy offers multiple benefits. It not only reduces agricultural waste but also cuts greenhouse gas emissions and provides additional income for local farmers. Furthermore, the adoption of biomass energy promotes the use of renewable energy sources and decreases reliance on fossil fuels.

Mr. Thunyawee further explained that the sugarcane bagasse leftover from sugar production is burned in the company’s biomass power plants to generate steam and electricity. The steam is used in various production processes within Mitr Phol’s sugar mills and other facilities, representing a form of green energy. Additionally, part of the bagasse is used to produce ethanol, which is blended with gasoline. The electricity generated is supplied to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), providing power for households and communities.

Currently, the Mitr Phol Group operates biomass power plants across several provinces in Thailand, including Suphan Buri, Sing Buri, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Loei, and Ayutthaya, with a total installed capacity of 463 megawatts. These plants are capable of supplying up to 197 megawatts of electricity to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA).

When comparing carbon dioxide emissions, ethanol, as an agricultural energy source, plays a significant role in reducing carbon emissions compared to fossil fuels. Specifically, one liter of ethanol emits only 0.74 kgCO2eq, whereas gasoline emits 3.4 kgCO2eq. Similarly, biomass electricity emits just 0.0520 kgCO2/kWh, compared to conventional electricity, which releases 0.4999 kgCO2/kWh.

To date, Mitr Phol has purchased over 1.7 million tons of sugarcane leaves, generating additional income of over 2.5 billion Baht for local farmers. When used to generate electricity, this amount can produce up to 650 MW, contributing to a circular income flow of approximately 16 billion baht within the system.
