OCSB and OIE Join Forces with Japan to Advance Thai Sugarcane Biomass into High-Value Biobased Products
Mr. Sittirong Rengngiap, Deputy Secretary-General of the Office of the Cane and Sugar, said that the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB) and the Office of Industrial Economics had welcomed Kensho Hayamizu, CEO of Japan-based miibio, and his delegation for a meeting to discuss potential areas of cooperation. The meeting was held at the Chunhavan Meeting Room on the third floor of the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in biotechnology to develop and produce high-value biochemicals, particularly from sugarcane and biomass. The initiative aims to add value to agricultural feedstocks and expand their applications in future industries, including the biochemicals, advanced materials, electronics, and semiconductor sectors.
Both sides also exchanged information on potential locations for establishing a commercial-scale production facility in Thailand, as well as relevant regulations and other factors. They further discussed opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation and investment between Thailand and Japan, particularly in developing sugarcane-based biomaterials as alternatives to petroleum-derived materials for semiconductor manufacturing. The initiative aims to upgrade Thailand’s cane and sugar industry through the development of higher-value products, while also exploring potential investment in Thailand to manufacture semiconductor components using biomaterials
